What to See and Do in Douglas!

Douglas, Wyoming, is a historic and vibrant city in the heart of Converse County, with a population of 6,364 as of 2019. It is the county seat and the home of the Wyoming State Fair, which attracts thousands of visitors every year. Douglas is also known as the “Home of the Jackalope,” a mythical creature that is part antelope and part jackrabbit. A statue of it is in the downtown area.

Douglas is located on the banks of the North Platte River at the intersection of Interstate 25 and Highway 59, making it easily accessible from all directions. It has a rich history dating back to 1867 when Fort Fetterman was built nearby to protect settlers and travelers. Douglas was platted in 1886 when the Wyoming Central Railway established a station there, and it became a hub for cattle ranching, railway crews, and the U.S. Army. Douglas was also the site of a World War II prisoner-of-war camp, which housed over 2,000 German and Italian prisoners.

Douglas offers a variety of attractions and activities for visitors, including the Douglas Railroad Interpretive Center, the Wyoming Pioneer Memorial Museum, the Fort Fetterman State Historic Site, the Douglas Community Golf Club, the Municipal Water Park, and the North Platte River Fishing. Douglas also has several historic buildings and landmarks, such as the former railroad passenger depot, the Sir Barton Memorial, and the Douglas Pioneer Cemetery. Douglas has various dining and lodging options, from cozy bed and breakfasts to modern hotels and motels, local cafes and diners, and fine restaurants and bars.

Douglas is ideal for a State Committee meeting in September, as it reflects the values of Wyoming pride, heritage, and spirit. Douglas is a friendly and welcoming community with a powerful sense of civic engagement and patriotism. Douglas is also a conservative and Republican stronghold, with 83.5% of the voters in Converse County voting for Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election. Douglas would be honored to host the September State Committee Meeting and showcase its charm, culture, and beauty.
